The first thing you need to know about The Island is it’s not an island at all. But if you’ve ever been to the beautiful Cornish town of St Ives, you’ll recognise The Island immediately. It’s the rocky headland between Porthmeor and Porthgwidden beaches that shelters St Ives harbour from the Atlantic.
Perched on the edge is the coastguard station and, just below it, I came across these wonderful old railings. Rusted by years of Atlantic wind and sea air, I couldn’t take my eyes off the contrast between the aqua blue of the sea crashing onto the dark rocks below and the rich warm orange of the railings.
That was the inspiration for this necklace. The aqua blue handprinted aluminium with its organic rusty orange lines captures the sea glimpsed through the railings. The plain rusty orange drop reflects the warm orange stone and the little satin silver oval echoes the breaking waves. Together, they hang from an oxidised silver chain, a nod to the dark rocks below.
